Cyberpunk 2077’s Crash and Burn

The videogame industry is one that has faced large amounts of criticism and backlash. As time goes on, games have developed to the point that they are a large part of our daily lives (if you are interested in them). Usually when games have been created, they create a following of those expecting to play the game, this usually being the initial group of players.

Cyberpunk 2077 is a great example of a game that was long awaited (nearly 10years) and had such a large following, that when it released, it surprisingly all went to chaos.

The developer, CD Projekt Red, had created such a hype for this game that the following was enormous, as was the high expectations set for the game. For a game that followed The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077 was predicted as one of the most anticipated games of the decade but as the New York Times said, the game became an example of how to not launch your videogame.

Before its release there were thousands of articles exploring the possibility of how amazing Cyberpunk 2077 may be, writer Ritwik Mitra for CBR.com said that the game may show an “intriguing futuristic landscape where they can roleplay as a unique character and embark on missions that can be accomplished through a bevy of strategies and methods.” But reflecting almost a year after the release, reviews weren’t quite agreeing with Mitra’s statement.

Players of the Cyberpunk 2077 game found that the games were optimized poorly for PS4 and Xbox One, the graphics were low and there were so many bugs for the game that they struggled to even play it. The game crashed constantly and players found it nearly impossible to even play it.

Another big fault that players had with the game, was promised features that never actually made it to the final version of the game. Developers promised features such as wall running, customisable cars and even different apartment options. CD Projekt Red were found to oversell certain elements from the game such as hacking, impact of your in-game choices and also the role of the police. Overall there were significant other issues such as limited story lines (for what was meant to be an open world choice based game), immersion issues and even the choppy character customisation. Overall, players were incredibly unhappy with the game and it received very low reviews on the game.

At this current moment, on the Steam store, Cyberpunk 2077’s reviews currently sit at “mixed” where approximately 66% of the 5,047 user reviews in the last 30 days were positive. After the release, the developers were eventually forced to release a statement regarding all the issues and had even allowed the process of allowing for players on the console’s to apply for a refund of the game – which from there lead to PlayStation to remove the game from their online store. Overall, Cyberpunk 2077 is a videogame that is neither amazing nor terrible (since patch releases to fix obvious issues.), after the initial disappointment of the game from such the hype, players have seemingly accepted the ‘terrible’ aspects of the game, and as all good things on the internet, it has become much of a meme.

Till next time,

Alex 🙂
